A rather stout perennial with a leafy flowering stem 15-50 cm high, growing from a firm, ovoid tuber and a second withered one.
Ecology UK: (distribution according to flora) It is a common plant of woodlands and pasture on basic soils throughout the British Isles [some losses of habitat, but remains the third most common British orchid]

Fleurs : purpurines ou roses, en épi multiflore cylindracé ou ovale assez lâche bractées à 1-3 nervures, égalant l'ovaire ; divisions extérieures obtuses, aiguës ou acuminées, les latérales étalées ou redressées, la supérieure et les 2 intérieures conniventes ; labelle presque plan ou plié, ponctué de pourpre, trilobé, à lobes peu inégaux, le moyen échancré éperon ascendant-horizontal, cylindrique en massue, égalant l'ovaire.
Floraison France : Avril-juin.
Flowers: 12-15 mm diam., in a rather long and lax raceme subtended by subulate bracts as long as ovary; outer perianth segments purple, lanceolate, acute, lateral segments spreading; inner segments linear, acute, connivent with the central outer one to form the helmet; lip ovate, rhomboid, purple-red with a few small spots, broader than long, three-lobed; lateral lobes rounded, crenulate, shorter than the rhomboidal, notched, central one; spur stout, straight, much longer than the ovary, swollen and furrowed at apex;
